Mid-Summer Turf Protection
Timing, purpose, and expectations for this application.
How This Application Works
The second combo application in the Turf Protection program addresses the other major summer threat: grubs. This application combines slow-release summer fertilizer (same concept as the standard summer fertilizer), preventative grub control, and a second round of fungal disease prevention.
Grub control is one of those things that seems optional until you understand the biology: adult beetles (Japanese beetles, European chafers, etc.) lay eggs in turf in early summer. Those eggs hatch into larvae (grubs) that immediately begin feeding on grass roots.
They're underground, invisible, eating your lawn's root system from below. By the time you see the damage - dead brown patches that peel back like carpet because the roots are gone - the destruction is already done.
The grass is dead. The roots are severed.
You can kill the grubs at that point, but you can't bring back the dead grass. The only effective strategy is prevention: applying insecticide before the eggs hatch, so the larvae die before they can feed.
That's what this application does. It also continues the fungicide protection established in the previous combo application, because summer disease pressure doesn't let up - if anything, late summer humidity can be worse than early summer.
And the fertilizer maintains nutrition through the end of summer, preparing the grass for the critical fall growing season. This application is essentially insurance against the two most destructive and expensive lawn problems: grub damage and fungal disease, both of which are nearly impossible to fix after they occur.
Benefits
- Prevents grub damage before it starts.
- Extends fungicide protection through late summer.
- Maintains nutrition into fall.
What to Expect
Before
Japanese beetles eggs can be present, late-summer disease pressure can be high.
After
Grubs are controlled preventatively and turf stays protected.
